A combination of my love of F1, and needing a faster and alternative medium to hole punch dots, combined with stumbling over 10 years worth of F1 Racing magazines I'd stashed over the years, led to me creating these portraits. I was making Simon Cowell's dot portrait and after no break from the dots for well over a year I wanted to have a play.

So used to working with such a small medium led me to make the first three of these (Jenson Button, David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen) quite large. I made Jenson first, in July 2009, in a hope it would bring him luck in winning the World Championship, as I had made Lewis in dots the year before, and finished it the week before he won. I like to think this picture brought Jenson a little luck.

Each Portrait only contains the articles of the relevant driver, and on the first one I tore the articles up quite small, but after the second one, and for the rest my confidence grew and I learned to place whole articles, which are fully readable.

David Coulthard, Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button portraits 2009.
In December 2009 my Jenson portrait was shown on Top Gear in Season 14 Episode 5, in which Jenson was the star in a reasonably priced car.
Above portraits were on display at the Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art.

Red Bull Portraits by Nikki Douthwaite

In the late summer of 2010, I decided to make the Mark Webber and Sebastien Vettel collages, because I enjoyed the quicker process and wanted to make more F1 pictures. I quite fancied Red Bull to win the championship and it happened that I made Seb first. As with Hamilton's dot picture in 2008, and Jenson's collage in 2009, the first F1 driver I made that year won the drivers' championship! I was on a roll. It was not a conscious decision to make Seb first, I just had the newer F1 racing magazines to hand and found more articles on him first. I made these pictures smaller, as I found transporting the larger ones difficult. These pictures were featured in F1 Racing magazine.

LEFT - In March 2011 I was contacted by CNN. They asked to borrow my collages for the back drop of the world sport F1 special season preview. At this point David had just retired and Kimi was taking a break from F1, so their portraits could not be used, so I was left with the large Jenson collage and smaller Webber and Vettel ones, so I agreed with only 2 weeks warning to make a Lewis collage the same size as Jenson as they were both now racing for McLaren. CNN loved the pictures so much they made an extra special feature programme interviewing me about my love of F1 and my work.

BELOW - I was honoured to be the only artist to be invited to display art work for the official opening of "The Wing" at Silverstone in May 2011. Silverstone wanted a larger collection of work than I had, I had already made a picture of Senna in dots and had the above collages, so I made Rubens Barrichello and Nico Rosberg in collage, as well as "dot Jenson" as I wanted people to know he was my favourite driver. I managed to get a few sneaky photographs even though cameras were really not allowed at the event. This was the first time I had been invited to anything F1 related, and I couldn't believe how lucky I was to be in the same room as all my British racing heroes.

Below is the only evidence I have that the walls above are in "The Wing" and that I attended, as cameras were not allowed during the actual event. I was privileged to be one of the first people to stand on the new podium!

The collages were also on display at the BRDC during the whole British Grand Prix Weekend.
